Securing loads on vehicles
Where to find advice and guidance on vehicle load safety
The Department for Transport (DfT) has published a code of practice that covers all aspects of securing loads on vehicles. It also describes specific requirements for particular types of loads, such as metal and timber, loose bulk loads, dangerous goods, pallets and containers.
Drivers and consignors can also find useful guidance on vehicle loading in the Safe Operator's Guide published by the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA). This guide also explains VOSA's enforcement powers, including those to stop vehicles carrying unsafe loads. Download VOSA's safe operator's guide (PDF, 2.29MB) - Opens in a new window.
The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) has a section of its website dedicated to vehicle load safety. It includes practical tips on risk management, advice sheets, sample loading plans and diagrams. Find guidance on load safety for drivers and operators on the HSE website - Opens in a new window.
HSE has also published several leaflets and advice sheets covering different aspects of load safety, including vehicle loading and unloading, and risk assessments.
