Government support: the basics

Introduction

The government provides support to help businesses to:

  • start up, grow and succeed
  • overcome current financial and economic challenges
  • innovate
  • trade internationally

There is a wide range of government support available to businesses, not only through grants and other funding but also through numerous advisory, guidance, information and other services, including training.

These services have been brought together for businesses in England under the Solutions for Business portfolio as part of the government's drive to streamline and simplify support for businesses.

Solutions for Business is only available in England. Government support for businesses is different in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The Business Link network and its advisers can advise you about the support available in your area. You can contact the Business Link Helpline on Tel 0845 600 9 006.

This guide explains the various forms of government support and how businesses can access them.
